Mesothelioma is a rare cancer, with an incidence in Australia of around 3 cases per 100,000 people. Australia has one of the highest incidence rates of mesothelioma in the world.
This rare and aggressive cancer has no cure, and between 700 and 800 people are diagnosed each year. The average time between diagnosis and death is around 11 months according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The Australian Rare Cancer Portal can assist treating clinicians locate clinical trials and access treatment for their patients. For example, the DREAM3R clinical trial is currently recruiting mesothelioma patients across Australia, to see whether adding Durvalumab (an immunotherapy drug) to standard chemotherapy will improve overall survival.
